Welcome to Donna Says, a blog that covers my love of all things food plus a few extras.

As the oldest daughter of southern parents, my mother worked hard to impart cooking skills onto me. She opened a catering business while I was still in grade school thus allowing me to refine my cooking skills as her sous chef and constant helper. Once in high school, I focused on baking breads, pastries, cakes, and other goodies while leaving the cooking behind for a bit. But that didn’t last for long.

While in college, I returned to my love of cooking and food. It has evolved into a desire to eat flavorfully, healthily, and locally. I continue to bake regularly and constantly seek out new recipes to try. Living in California, New York City, and now DC, continues to expand my palate and sense of food adventure. And my busy career keeps me focused on the ease and time required to make a meal.

I am a huge fan of Thai and Japanese cuisine and I’ll never turn down a slice of thin crust pizza or California style Mexican. I love to travel and try to visit a new country every year. The Food Network is one of my favorite channels and I can watch Rachel Ray, Bobby Flay, and Alton Brown for hours.

I spent grad school living in Northern California. This was the perfect playground for learning about wine and sampling various offerings. Weekends were filled with day trips to Napa and visits to various wineries. Cakebread, St. Supery, V. Sattui are just some of the wineries I visited on multiple occasions. My love of wine started with Moscato, evolved into light white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, and has settled on full-bodied reds like Santa Barbara Pinot Noirs.
